Abstract:

Photographic prints and negatives chiefly document the ruins of the St. Francis Dam (Los Angeles County) after its catastrophic failure in 1928. Lantern slides depict various mines, railways, power plants, cargo ships and other subjects pertaining to the coal industry of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in the United States.

James Noble Hatch was a civil engineer who worked in Chicago, Michigan and California, and perhaps elsewhere. Among his projects was the design of the power sub-stations for Henry Huntington's Pacific Electric Railway System. He was also a poet, publishing Mirthful Musings in 1925.
